Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 cup warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
For the Sauce:
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 garlic clove, minced (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Toppings:
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup toppings of your choice (pepperoni, mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, olives, etc.)
- Fresh basil (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
Step 1: Make the Dough
- In a small bowl, mix the warm water and sugar, then sprinkle the yeast on top. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Mix until it forms a dough, then knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
Step 2: Prepare the Sauce
- In a small bowl, mix the tomato sauce, oregano, basil, minced garlic (if using), and salt and pepper. Set aside.
Step 3: Shape and Pre-Bake the Dough
- Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C).
- Punch down the dough, then roll it out on a lightly floured surface to your desired thickness.
- Transfer the dough to a pizza pan or baking sheet. Use a fork to poke small holes across the dough to prevent bubbles.
Step 4: Assemble the Pizza
- Spread the sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border for the crust.
- Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese on top, then add your choice of toppings.
Step 5: Bake
- Bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly.
- Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh basil if desired, and let it cool for a couple of minutes before slicing.
