Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)

For the Sauce:

  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 garlic clove, minced (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Toppings:

  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup toppings of your choice (pepperoni, mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, olives, etc.)
  • Fresh basil (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Dough

  1. In a small bowl, mix the warm water and sugar, then sprinkle the yeast on top. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  3. Mix until it forms a dough, then knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 2: Prepare the Sauce

  1. In a small bowl, mix the tomato sauce, oregano, basil, minced garlic (if using), and salt and pepper. Set aside.

Step 3: Shape and Pre-Bake the Dough

  1. Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C).
  2. Punch down the dough, then roll it out on a lightly floured surface to your desired thickness.
  3. Transfer the dough to a pizza pan or baking sheet. Use a fork to poke small holes across the dough to prevent bubbles.

Step 4: Assemble the Pizza

  1. Spread the sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border for the crust.
  2. Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese on top, then add your choice of toppings.

Step 5: Bake

  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly.
  2. Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh basil if desired, and let it cool for a couple of minutes before slicing.
