Dumpling Lasagna

A creative twist on classic lasagna

If you love lasagna but want something quicker, softer, and even more comforting, this dumpling lasagna is the perfect upgrade. Instead of traditional pasta sheets, this recipe uses tender dumplings layered with rich meat sauce and melted cheese, creating a dish that’s both familiar and completely new.

Ingredients

For the meat sauce:

  • 500g ground beef (or chicken)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • Salt & pepper

For the dumpling layer:

  • 1 pack dumplings (store-bought or homemade)
👉 Chicken, beef, or veggie dumplings all work

For the cheese layer:

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan
  • 1/2 cup ricotta or cream cheese (optional for creaminess)

Instructions

1. Prepare the sauce

In a large pan, cook the onion and garlic until soft and fragrant. Add the ground meat and cook until browned.

Stir in the tomato sauce, tomato paste, and spices. Let the sauce simmer for about 10–15 minutes until thick and rich.

2. Prepare the dumplings

If using frozen dumplings, lightly boil or pan-sear them for a few minutes (just until slightly cooked). This helps them stay soft and not dry in the oven.

3. Assemble the layers

In a baking dish, start with a layer of meat sauce at the bottom.

Add:

  • A layer of dumplings
  • A spoonful of ricotta (optional)
  • A sprinkle of mozzarella

Repeat the layers until everything is used, finishing with:

  • Sauce
  • A generous layer of mozzarella and parmesan

4. Bake

Cover the dish with foil and bake at 180°C (350°F) for about 25 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake for another 10–15 minutes until the cheese is golden and bubbly.

5. Rest and serve

Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before serving. This helps the layers set and makes it easier to scoop.

Texture & flavor

  • Soft, juicy dumplings
  • Rich, savory sauce
  • Gooey melted cheese
  • Slightly crispy golden top

It’s like lasagna—but softer, richer, and even more comforting.

Tips for best results

  • Use pan-seared dumplings for extra flavor
  • Don’t skip the resting time (important for structure)
  • Add herbs like basil or parsley for freshness
  • Use a mix of cheeses for deeper flavor

When to serve

  • Family dinners
  • Meal prep (it reheats well)
  • Cozy comfort food nights

Final thought

Dumpling lasagna is proof that you don’t need to follow the rules to make something amazing. By combining simple ingredients in a new way, you get a dish that’s both comforting and exciting—perfect for sharing and even better for seconds.
